“I am happy to see that in my land, people have risen in one voice and spoken – no to buying of votes, no to dynastic politics, and yes to a generational shift in politics,” said K Annamalai after the results of the Tamil Nadu elections on May 4, 2026. The actor C. Joseph Vijay’s party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), has disrupted the long-standing political landscape by emerging as the single-largest party in its debut election.
The TVK is leading in 110 of the 234 constituencies. The ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) is ahead in 61 seats, while the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK)-led alliance is leading in 62 seats. Vijay contested from two constituencies—Perambur and Tiruchirappalli East—and is leading in both.
Key statistics:
- TVK has secured 34.72 percent of the vote share, approximately 1.18 crore votes.
- The DMK has polled around 24 percent, with about 84 lakh votes.
- The AIADMK has 21 percent of the vote share, or about 73.93 lakh votes.
- Voter turnout reached an unprecedented 85.1 percent.
TVK workers began celebrating outside the party’s headquarters in Chennai as trends placed them as the single-largest party in the Assembly. This performance cut across urban centers and rural constituencies, including traditional DMK strongholds.
Vijay is currently leading in Tiruchirappalli East by a margin of 6,499 votes at the end of the first round of counting. His victory signifies a notable shift away from decades of dominance by established Dravidian parties.
“Congratulations to Vijay sir for achieving such a big victory and impact in his first election,” said actor Sivakarthikeyan. Observers note that TVK’s rise reflects a growing desire for change among voters disillusioned with traditional politics.
The next steps for TVK will involve forming alliances and establishing a governance framework as they prepare for their new role in Tamil Nadu’s political arena.
