“I’m honored to join the Toronto Maple Leafs organization and excited to work alongside Mats and the entire organization,” said John Chayka, who was hired as the new General Manager on May 3, 2026.
The appointment comes after Chayka’s controversial exit from the Arizona Coyotes. He previously served as their GM and president of hockey operations. During his tenure, he became the youngest GM in NHL history at age 26. However, he did not lead the Coyotes to any playoff appearances.
Chayka is now the 19th General Manager in Maple Leafs history. The team missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time since 2016-17, finishing with a record of 32 wins, 36 losses, and 14 overtime losses.
Mats Sundin has also joined the organization as Senior Executive Advisor of Hockey Operations. His career with the Maple Leafs includes a franchise record of 987 points. Sundin expressed gratitude for his new role, stating, “This fan base deserves greatness, and I am grateful for the opportunity to help this team, organization and city achieve that.”
Both Chayka and Sundin will work closely to reshape the Maple Leafs roster. They aim to build a competitive and driven team for their fans. Keith Pelley remarked, “Today is an important day for the Toronto Maple Leafs organization.”
The upcoming season will be crucial for both Chayka and Sundin as they attempt to restore hope among fans after recent disappointments.
