The new Steam Controller features innovative technology designed to enhance the gaming experience for PC gamers. Orders opened on May 4 at 1 p.m. ET, marking a significant moment for Valve and its community.
Will Greenwald commented, “The new Steam Controller is much more solid, comparable with an Xbox gamepad in heft and grip curve.” The device boasts two regular analog sticks, face and shoulder buttons, optional back buttons, and two trackpads. This design aims to provide better controller support across a wide range of games.
Valve has integrated community feedback from users of the Steam Deck into the design process. The charging puck snaps onto the controller for easy charging during gameplay. Jessica Conditt described it by saying, “The puck snaps onto the belly of the controller for charging, and when you hover the gamepad’s connection point over it, it jumps up and latches on like a cute little sucker fish.” This feature allows for uninterrupted play.
The Steam Controller is fully customizable and compatible with almost every game in the Steam library. It uses TMR sticks for durability and offers more than 30 hours of battery life on a single charge. Additionally, it supports up to four controllers through its charging puck.
The internal design facilitates easier repairs and modifications. The symmetrical layout resembles that of Sony’s designs while incorporating capacitive touchpad technology from Cirque. This blend of features aims to cater to diverse input device preferences among gamers.
The original Steam Controller was released in 2015 but was considered a noble failure. However, Valve’s latest iteration seems poised to address past shortcomings effectively.
The next expected development includes further community engagement as Valve refines its products based on user experiences and feedback.
