The Government of Canada is investing in lithium supply chains to create jobs and prosperity across the country. Canada has an estimated 6.5 million tonnes of lithium resources and ranks as the seventh largest producer globally.
In a significant development, Mangrove Lithium announced plans for a new refining facility in Delta, British Columbia. This facility will produce enough lithium for approximately 25,000 electric vehicles per year. The investment is part of a broader strategy to bolster the domestic supply of critical minerals.
Mangrove Lithium received a conditional investment of up to $21.9 million under the Critical Minerals Research, Development and Demonstration Program. This funding aims to enhance Canada’s position in the global lithium market.
Meanwhile, in Ontario, the provincial government plans to introduce legislation requiring the Ombudsman to be bilingual. The current Ombudsman, Paul Dubé, completed his term on March 31, 2026. A selection committee for his successor has not yet been announced.
Caroline Mulroney emphasized the importance of bilingual services: “Exiger que l’ombudsman soit bilingue est une mesure pratique et nécessaire pour favoriser une communication claire.”
Fabien Hébert welcomed the move, stating that a fully bilingual Ombudsman represents significant progress for Ontario’s francophone community. Andrea Khanjin noted that this change would help eliminate unnecessary linguistic barriers within the oversight system.
This legislative effort follows previous actions by the Ontario government that eliminated the independence of the French services commissioner in 2019. Observers believe these changes are aimed at improving service delivery to Ontario’s 650,000 francophones.
Yet, details remain unconfirmed regarding how quickly these legislative changes will take effect or who will be appointed as the new Ombudsman. As developments unfold, stakeholders are closely monitoring both initiatives — one focused on critical minerals and the other on language accessibility in government services.
