Céline Galipeau, a veteran journalist, is set to leave her role as host of Le téléjournal after 18 years. She will take on a new position leading an international news program starting in the fall of 2026.
The new program will air live on Fridays at 8 PM on ICI RDI and will be rebroadcast on Sundays at 5 PM on ICI Télé and ICI Tou.tv. Galipeau aims to provide in-depth coverage of complex global issues and feature discussions with experts.
Galipeau has been with Radio-Canada since 1984 and has worked as a correspondent for 14 years. She was the first woman to host Le téléjournal after Bernard Derome’s departure in 2008. Her last broadcast of the show will be on June 18, 2026.
Throughout her career, Galipeau has covered significant events, including the invasion of Ukraine by Russia and the COVID-19 pandemic. She expressed a desire to pilot an international news magazine for a long time, stating, “Ce nouveau défi vient combler un désir que j’avais depuis longtemps, celui de piloter un magazine d’actualité internationale et de pouvoir prendre le temps d’expliquer les questions complexes.”
Galipeau has received numerous journalism awards, including the Amnesty International Prize in 1995 and the Medal of Honor from the National Assembly of Quebec in 2018. She also holds honorary doctorates from the University of Ottawa, Bishop’s University, and McGill University.
The new program reflects her commitment to deeper engagement with global issues. Galipeau noted that she wants to take a step back from daily news coverage to foster reflection on international matters.
As she prepares for this transition, Galipeau’s extensive experience positions her well for this new challenge. She has covered various conflicts over her career, including the Gulf War and the war in Chechnya.
