Bell has replaced its $80 connection fee with a new $40 device handling fee, effective May 5, 2026. This change comes after the CRTC banned connection fees, raising questions about Bell’s compliance with regulatory standards.
The new device handling fee applies to orders completed over the phone, in-store, and online. However, it does not apply to smartwatches or customers who bring their own devices. Bell states that this charge covers fulfillment costs associated with device orders.
The CRTC’s new fee rules will officially take effect on June 12, 2026. The old connection fee was criticized by the CRTC as a “junk fee.” Bell claims that the new fee complies with the CRTC’s regulations regarding reasonable fees.
Both Bell and Virgin have introduced this one-time charge of $40 as part of their updated pricing structures. The charge is also noted as being subject to change over time. Officials have not confirmed how many carriers will follow Bell’s lead in introducing similar fees.
Bell has a history of flouting CRTC rules, including past incidents of locking smartphones despite prohibitions. This latest move may prompt further scrutiny from regulators and competitors alike.
