The repeated drone strikes on the Tuapse refinery have resulted in significant environmental damage and public health warnings for local residents. Residents of Tuapse were ordered not to drink tap water after a strike on the oil facility. Authorities advised limiting outdoor activities due to elevated benzene levels in the air.
The Tuapse oil refinery was struck three times by Ukrainian drones in April 2026. The first strike occurred on April 16, causing a fire that lasted two days. The second strike took place on April 20, resulting in a fire that lasted five days.
Emergency workers have cleared 12,600 cubic metres of contaminated material in Tuapse. At least eight storage tanks at the refinery were destroyed during the attacks, leaking petroleum into the Tuapse River. A black rain phenomenon occurred, covering cars and animals in oil residue.
The environmental impact is severe, described as an ecological disaster by experts. Volunteers have set up animal cleanup centres to assist distressed animals covered in oil. The local health authority recommended residents consume only bottled water as a precaution.
Yet, some residents remain optimistic. One anonymous resident stated, “Everything is safe and under control!” However, Sergei Solovev labeled the situation an environmental disaster. Ruslan Khvostov warned that the oil slick blocks oxygen, leading to mass mortality of aquatic life.
The situation escalated further after the third drone strike, leading to the evacuation of the town. The two countries have been locked in conflict since February 2022, following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
