Severe thunderstorms are forecasted to hit Quebec on May 5, 2026, bringing significant wind and rainfall. The storms will arrive earlier than usual this year, impacting several regions across the province.
Severe thunderstorm warnings have been issued for areas including Estrie, Centre-du-Québec, and Saguenay. Wind gusts of 70 km/h or more are possible, which could lead to power outages.
Heavy rainfall is also anticipated. Accumulations could reach up to 60 mm in certain areas by Thursday evening. The eastern part of the province may experience the heaviest rain.
Temperatures will drop sharply overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday. A significant cold front will cause temperatures to fall by 12 degrees within just 12 hours after the storms.
The afternoon on May 5 will see the highest risk of thunderstorms, continuing into the evening. This unusual timing for severe weather raises concerns among residents and officials alike.
Benoit Chartier noted, “C’est un moment que l’on attend avec impatience chaque printemps et qui s’est fait plutôt rare cette année : une journée avec des températures au-dessus des normales de saison, et avec un peu de chance, autour de la barre des 20°.”
Chartier also mentioned that afternoon storms pose a greater risk. He stated, “C’est en après-midi que le risque d’orages sera le plus élevé.” Residents should prepare for possible disruptions due to severe weather.
Officials emphasize the importance of staying informed through severe weather alerts. They encourage everyone to monitor local forecasts closely as conditions develop.
