“They’ve served us well for the past 30 years but all organizations evolve…” said Coun. Jason Heistad regarding the recent dissolution of Parkland Community Planning Services (PCPS). Innisfail, Alberta, now faces significant changes in municipal planning after PCPS dissolved on March 26 due to financial challenges. The organization had provided planning services since 1995 for over a dozen Central Alberta communities.
Key facts about PCPS:
- Innisfail’s annual cost for PCPS services ranged from $20,000 to $30,000.
- At the time of dissolution, PCPS had remaining liabilities of approximately $140,000.
- Innisfail’s share of this liability amounts to $20,917.61.
- The town is also owed $4,150 for subdivision fees for 2025-26.
The community is also adjusting to changes at the Innisfail Aquatic Centre, which has recently reopened after modernization. This upgrade included the addition of universal change rooms. Community reactions have been mixed. A male fellow swimmer remarked, “It is different; but, it’s OK. It will grow on us!”
A sign at the aquatic centre misspelled ‘Innisfail’ as ‘Innifail’. The Department of Transport and Main Roads acknowledged this error and stated that a replacement sign will be installed within three weeks.
Community feedback:
- Some residents appreciate the modernization efforts.
- Others express concerns about planning service disruptions.
- The town anticipates further discussions on municipal planning needs.
As Innisfail navigates these dual challenges, officials are expected to explore new pathways for effective municipal planning while ensuring community needs are met.
