The BMW iX was introduced in 2021 as a dedicated electric vehicle. It served as a technological flagship for the brand, featuring a bold design and minimalist interior. However, BMW has announced it will discontinue the iX electric SUV in the United States. This decision comes amid declining sales and a strategic shift towards new models.
Sales of the iX fell by over 50 percent in the U.S. in 2026, with only 1,788 units sold by the end of Q1 that year. In contrast, about 5,000 units were sold in 2022. The decline prompted BMW to reassess its product lineup and market strategy.
BMW plans to transition to its Neue Klasse models, starting with the iX3. The iX3 is expected to have an EPA range of 400 miles and a starting price of around $60,000 in the U.S. This model aims to capitalize on growing demand for electric SUVs while addressing past sales challenges.
A BMW spokesperson stated, “We are concluding U.S. allocation of the BMW iX as we prepare for the next generation of our fully electric vehicles.” They emphasized their commitment to electrification and highlighted that the iX has served as a showcase for innovation since its introduction.
The iX was BMW’s second dedicated EV after the original i3. It garnered attention for its performance capabilities, with models like the iX xDrive45 offering 402 horsepower at a price of $75,150, and the more powerful xDrive60 starting at $88,500 with 536 horsepower.
Despite discontinuing the iX in the U.S., it will remain available in other markets until 2027. This strategy allows BMW to maintain a presence in segments where demand remains strong while focusing resources on newer models like the iX3.
Observers expect that this shift will help BMW navigate a competitive landscape in electric vehicles. The company aims to leverage its broad powertrain portfolio to adapt to changing consumer preferences and regulatory requirements.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding specific timelines for the rollout of the iX3 and other Neue Klasse models. However, BMW’s commitment to evolving its lineup suggests that further announcements are forthcoming.
