Investigators have concluded that the Bayesian yacht sank on August 19, 2024, off the coast of Sicily not due to a storm but because of crew negligence and improper safety measures. The vessel sank near Palermo at around 5 a.m., resulting in the deaths of Mike Lynch, his daughter Hannah, and five others.
The investigation revealed that the weather conditions at the time were manageable, amounting to little more than a squall. Italian prosecutors stated that the crew’s improper actions and underestimation of the weather contributed significantly to the sinking.
An interim report indicated that wind speeds reached 63.4 knots, which were sufficient to capsize the yacht. Investigators noted that “the Bayesian should have been able to handle the powerful weather.” However, vulnerabilities in stability information were not identified in the stability information book carried on board.
The investigation raised the possibility of criminal negligence against the captain and two crew members involved. The exact reasons for their improper actions remain unclear.
