Alysha Newman received a 20-month ban for missed doping controls despite having ended her career as a pole vaulter. The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) imposed the ban after Newman failed to report her whereabouts on three occasions in a year.
Newman was unavailable for an unannounced doping control in February last year and twice more in August. Three whereabouts failures within a 12-month period can lead to sanctions under anti-doping rules.
The suspension will last until August 2027, but Newman had already decided to retire from competitive pole vaulting. She won bronze for Canada at the 2024 Paris Olympics, alongside other notable achievements.
Newman competed in two world championships finals and earned medals at both the Commonwealth Games and Pan American Games. She is now 31 years old, reflecting on her athletic journey.
Despite the ban, she remains proud of her accomplishments. “I had to leave immediately to participate in the filming of a television game show,” she said regarding her decision to step back from athletics.
The AIU acknowledged Newman’s retirement, which adds complexity to the implications of her suspension. As she moves forward, the focus shifts to how this will affect her future endeavors outside of sports.
