The Telus Cup raises an important question: Can the Regina Pat Canadians win back-to-back championships? Yes, they can. The Regina Pat Canadians are the defending champions and have a strong track record.
This year marks the 11th appearance for Regina at the Telus Cup. They have previously won five national championships: in 1983, 1988, 1994, 1999, and most recently in 2025. Last year, Maddox Schultz was named the tournament MVP, highlighting his contributions to the team’s success.
Regina scored 258 goals and allowed only 118 during the regular season. Their performance in the playoffs was equally impressive with a record of 12-3. They scored 71 goals and allowed just 40 in playoff games. To qualify for this year’s Telus Cup, Regina defeated the Moose Jaw Warriors 5-1 in the Western Regionals final.
The tournament format includes six teams: five regional champions and a host team. This year’s host is Peterborough, ON. The Regina Pat Canadians will face tough competition from teams like the Peterborough U18 Petes, Moose Jaw Warriors, Thunder Bay Kings, and Winnipeg Bruins.
But Regina is not without its challenges. Only three teams have won back-to-back Telus Cup championships: the Red Deer Chiefs, Notre Dame Hounds, and Prince Albert Mintos. The pressure will be on Regina to replicate their past success.
Cooper Bratton acknowledges the determination needed for this challenge. He stated, “It takes a lot of determination. Some guys on this team have been in this spot before.” Ryan Hodgins echoed similar sentiments about the unique pressures of tournament play. “In a series, if you have a bad game, you have a chance to respond in a best-of-five. In these tournaments, it’s not always the case,” he said.
The excitement is palpable as players gear up for this prestigious event. “We’re ready to go. It’s very exciting,” said Hodgins. Fans will be eager to see if Regina can make history by becoming only the fourth team to win consecutive gold medals at the Telus Cup.
Details remain unconfirmed about potential injuries or roster changes leading up to the tournament. However, one thing is clear: all eyes will be on Regina as they attempt to defend their title in Peterborough.
