Wild re-sign Michael McCarron to six-year, $20M deal
McCarron’s New Deal with the Wild
The Minnesota Wild announced on Tuesday that they have re-signed forward Michael McCarron to a six-year, $20 million deal. This agreement is set to commence with the 2026-27 season and will extend through the 2031-32 season. The deal carries an average annual value of $3.3 million.
McCarron, a 31-year-old player, was acquired by the Wild from the Nashville Predators prior to the trade deadline of the current NHL season. He had been anticipated to be a significant presence in free agency on July 1, particularly given his versatility and the limited number of available centers in the market.
The contract includes a full no-move clause for the initial three years. For the subsequent three years, it features a 15-team no-trade list combined with a no-move clause that prevents him from being placed on waivers. The contract also contains language specifying that he does not need to be protected in the event of an expansion draft.
The annual salary breakdown for the contract is as follows: $4.5 million, $4 million, $3.4 million, $2.7 million, $2.7 million, and $2.7 million.
Player and Team Perspectives
McCarron expressed his satisfaction with remaining with the Wild, citing a “winning culture” and a strong fit within the team. He indicated that the environment was so positive that he saw “no point looking elsewhere in free agency.” This decision was made despite the potential for a larger financial offer in free agency, as McCarron prioritized being in a strong position with a team aiming for a Stanley Cup and having management that believed in him.
Wild president of hockey operations and general manager Bill Guerin highlighted McCarron’s integral role since joining the team at the trade deadline. Guerin noted McCarron’s contributions on the ice, as well as the positive sentiment from teammates and coaches, describing him as a “perfect fit.” Guerin also appreciated McCarron’s desire to stay with the team, emphasizing that the player’s commitment meant more than just the financial aspect.
McCarron’s agent, Wade Arnott, stated that the Wild’s approach since the trade deadline made McCarron feel like a significant part of the team. Arnott added that McCarron believes the Wild have a special situation and he wants to be involved.
On-Ice Contributions and Career Path
During his time with the Wild, McCarron recorded three goals and two assists in 20 regular-season games. He further contributed two goals and two assists in 11 post-season contests. Across his career, which includes stints with the Wild, Predators, and Montreal Canadiens, McCarron has accumulated 36 goals and 43 assists over 381 games.
McCarron was originally selected by the Canadiens as the 25th overall pick in the 2013 NHL Draft. His career path involved finding his identity as an everyday NHL player later in his career, around the age of 28, and after joining his second NHL team. He also participated in the NHL/NHLPA player assistance program.

McCarron made a notable impact in Minnesota, particularly in the faceoff circle and on the penalty kill, and by scoring key goals during the playoffs. He won 51.4 percent of faceoffs during the regular season with the Wild and 54.5 percent in the playoffs. The 6-foot-6 right-shot center was on the ice for four goals in 20 regular-season games and five goals in 11 playoff games.
The Wild had paid a second-round pick to acquire McCarron from the Predators at the trade deadline. McCarron’s desire to stay in the Midwest, being a “Detroit kid,” also played a role in his decision, despite the weather, due to the strong team and group of players.
McCarron’s career saw a turning point with the Predators, where current Wild coach John Hynes was behind the bench. He became a key role player and “glue guy” for Nashville, which led to interest from more than 10 teams at this season’s trade deadline.
The Wild have other potential free agents, including Mats Zuccarello, Vladimir Tarasenko, Nick Foligno, and Zach Bogosian, with mutual interest, especially concerning Zuccarello.
