Maple Leafs acquire Ersson, Andrae and pick from Flyers for Woll, Benoit
Maple Leafs make significant trade
The Toronto Maple Leafs have announced a trade with the Philadelphia Flyers, sending goaltender Joseph Woll and defenceman Simon Benoit to Philadelphia. In return, Toronto receives goaltender Samuel Ersson, defenceman Emil Andrae, and a third-round pick in the upcoming NHL Draft. This move marks the first major transaction under the Maple Leafs’ new general manager, John Chayka, and senior executive advisor Mats Sundin.
The trade was confirmed on Tuesday, with the Maple Leafs preparing to select first overall at the NHL Draft on June 26.
Player movements and performance
Joseph Woll, 27, was a steady presence for the Maple Leafs during the 2025-26 season, recording a 15-16-7 record with a 3.31 goals-against average and an .899 save percentage across 39 starts. However, he faced injury challenges throughout the year and missed the beginning of the season due to personal reasons, making his season debut in mid-November. Woll was originally drafted by the Maple Leafs in the third round in 2016. After three years at Boston College, he progressed through the Marlies before making his NHL debut in the 2021-22 season. Over 117 NHL games, he has accumulated a 63-43-9 record with a 2.94 GAA and a .906 save percentage. Woll is currently owed $3.6 million for the next two seasons.
Simon Benoit, 27, spent the last three seasons with the Maple Leafs, following three years with the Ducks. In the 2025-26 campaign, the Laval, Que., native played 73 games, contributing six assists and finishing with a minus-22 rating, which was the lowest among Maple Leafs defencemen. Throughout his 352-game NHL career, Benoit has registered six goals and 30 assists. He is entering the final year of his $1.35 million contract.
New additions to the Maple Leafs roster
The Maple Leafs have acquired Samuel Ersson, a 26-year-old goaltender who experienced his least effective season in his four-year career during 2025-26. He posted a 14-11-5 record with a 3.12 GAA and an .870 save percentage, as Dan Vladar assumed the primary goaltending role for the Flyers. Since being drafted in the fifth round in 2018, Ersson, a Swedish goaltender, has a career record of 65-50-17 with a 3.01 GAA and an .884 save percentage. He is currently a restricted free agent and will require a new contract for the 2026-27 season. If Ersson is signed, the Maple Leafs’ goaltending options for the upcoming season would include Anthony Stolarz, Dennis Hildeby, Ersson, and Artur Akhtyamov, who is currently with the Marlies in the Calder Cup.
Emil Andrae, 24, is a Swedish-born left-shot defenceman who had his best season in 2025-26. He recorded two goals and 11 assists in 61 games, setting career highs in both categories. He also added one assist in four post-season games. Andrae was selected 54th overall by the Flyers in 2020. With Andrae effectively replacing Benoit on the blue line, the Maple Leafs’ defencemen under contract for next season include Morgan Rielly, Jake McCabe, Chris Tanev, Oliver Ekman-Larsson, Brandon Carlo, and Phillipe Myers. Like Ersson, Andrae is a restricted free agent.
This trade represents a significant roster adjustment for the Maple Leafs as they prepare for the upcoming NHL Draft on June 26.
