4 CFL Weekly Fantasy Sleepers you need in your lineup in Week 9 - CFL.ca
Week 9 of the Canadian Football League season includes a rematch between the Edmonton Elks and the Saskatchewan Roughriders, following their Week 8 encounter. The schedule also features Friday Night Football with the Montreal Alouettes visiting the Ottawa Redblacks, and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats hosting the Calgary Stampeders.
Elks and Roughriders Prepare for Rematch
The Elks and Roughriders are set to play again at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton. Their previous game in Week 8 saw the Elks secure a victory with a walk-off field goal. In that game, Edmonton quarterback Cody Fajardo recorded 510 passing yards and four touchdowns against his former team, despite the Roughriders having a strong pass defence.
The Elks are allowing the fewest offensive points per game entering Week 9, while Saskatchewan ranks third in this category. The Week 8 game between these two teams combined for 70 points, but the defensive statistics suggest a potentially lower-scoring rematch.
For the Roughriders, running back AJ Ouellette did not participate in practice on Tuesday. This could mean more offensive snaps for Quali Conley, who previously made consecutive starts for the defending Grey Cup champions, accumulating 21.4 Fantasy Points and a touchdown on 124 yards from scrimmage. Conley averages 5.4 yards per carry.
Key Matchups and Player Spotlights
The Alouettes, currently on a four-game winning streak, will face the Redblacks in Ottawa. Montreal had a short week of preparation, with only four days off, while Ottawa is coming off a bye week with 11 days to prepare. In their Week 4 matchup, the Alouettes narrowly defeated the Redblacks, with Ottawa quarterback Jake Maier completing 71.0 percent of his passes for 336 yards and three touchdowns.
Montreal‘s ground game has been effective, with Travis Theis recording 123 rushing yards in Week 7 and 156 yards in Week 8. The Redblacks‘ defence has struggled against rushing attacks, allowing an average of 123.2 rushing yards per game and 5.2 yards per carry.
The Hamilton Tiger-Cats will host the Calgary Stampeders. The Stampeders‘ offence has been productive, averaging 39.7 points per game and scoring 50 points in a game twice this season. Quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. has set a record with 18 touchdown passes without an interception to start the 2026 season, and 23 consecutive majors without an interception dating back to last year.
Calgary‘s ground game is led by Dedrick Mills, who leads the league in carries with 95 and yards with 584. The Tiger-Cats‘ defence, led by Brent Monson, ranks among the top two in several statistical categories, including points allowed (27.1), net offence allowed (369.7), and passing yards allowed (283.1). However, Hamilton has shown some susceptibility to the run.
Tiger-Cats quarterback Tre Ford, in his third start, will face a Calgary defence that has allowed the most net offence and passing yards, and the second most points. Ford scored 10.4 Fantasy Points against the Alouettes in Week 8, and the Stampeders‘ defence has allowed a league-high 29 offensive majors and 435.1 offensive yards.
Other Notable Players and Matchups
Brendan O’Leary-Orange of the Elks has achieved double-digit fantasy totals in two of his last three games. He made 18 receptions from 22 targets, scoring his first touchdown of the 2026 season in Week 8. His salary of $7,200 makes him a cost-effective option for fantasy players.
Larry Rountree III of the Tiger-Cats has seen increased involvement in the passing game since Bo Levi Mitchell‘s ankle injury in Week 5. Over the last four games, Rountree III has 22 combined passing targets and 17 receptions. The Stampeders‘ defence has averaged 36.6 pass attempts against per game and 25.1 receptions against per game.
Dru Brown, quarterback for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, has been a streaming option since taking over for the injured Zach Collaros. Brown has attempted 40 or more passes in Winnipeg‘s last two games, with an average of 38.0 attempts in his three starts, and 301.7 passing yards per game.
Damonte Coxie, a receiver for the Toronto Argonauts, has been targeted 36 times over the last four games, resulting in 25 receptions and 378 combined yards. Nick Mardner, the second overall pick of the 2024 CFL Canadian Draft, has been a full participant in practice this week, potentially indicating his return to action after missing the entire 2025 regular season due to a lower-body injury.
The Week 9 schedule begins with the BC Lions facing the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Thursday.
