The 2026 Met Gala is scheduled for May 4, 2026, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The event has sparked criticism and calls for a boycott because of Amazon’s role as a main funding source.
The theme for this year’s gala is ‘Costume Art,’ with the dress code set as ‘Fashion is Art.’ The fundraising event will support the Costume Institute’s spring 2026 exhibition. Last year, the gala raised more than $31 million US.
This year’s event will feature celebrity attendance and is co-chaired by Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman, Venus Williams, and Anna Wintour. Honorary chairs Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez Bezos add to the controversy surrounding the event.
Tickets for the gala are priced at $100,000 US each, while a table of ten starts at $350,000 US. Approximately 400 guests are expected to walk the red carpet.
Andrew Bolton commented on the theme, stating, “It’s reversing what we’ve done before.” Critics argue that Amazon’s involvement undermines the artistic integrity of the gala.
Zohran Mamdani expressed concerns about affordability in an expensive city. He stated, “My focus is also on affordability and making the most expensive city in the United States affordable.” This highlights ongoing debates about access to high-profile events like this.
The gala will inaugurate the new Condé M. Nast Galleries, which span 1,115 square meters. As preparations continue, many watch closely as voices against Amazon’s sponsorship grow louder.
Gwyneth Paltrow remarked on her attire for the event: “I guess it’s punk in that I’ve gone just totally classic on a punk night.” Her comments reflect the diverse interpretations of this year’s fashion theme.
