The 2026 Kerala election results indicate a major political shift in India. The Congress party won or was leading in 98 of the 140 seats in the Kerala legislature. This marks the end of left-wing governance in the state.
The Left Democratic Front (LDF) won or was leading in only 35 seats, while the BJP emerged victorious in three. This outcome is historic as it is the first time in decades that no Indian state is ruled by the left.
The left has faced a steady decline in parliamentary elections over the years. The number of seats held by left parties dropped dramatically from 62 in 2004 to just eight now. Experts suggest that this decline reflects a loss of credibility for the LDF, which had been in power since 2016.
Rahul Verma noted, “This year’s election results indicate that, for the first time, the left may not come to power in any state.” Harish Vasudevan added that the left has compromised its ideology, contributing to its current predicament.
The BJP’s vote share hovered around 11% in these elections. While they secured only three seats, their presence has grown significantly compared to previous years.
Looking ahead, experts believe that the persistence of economic issues could create an opportunity for the left to reinvent itself. Rajarshi Dasgupta remarked on the potential for a comeback if they can effectively address these challenges.
