Jessica Campbell, the first full-time female assistant coach in NHL history, is set to explore new coaching opportunities after her contract with the Seattle Kraken expires. Her contract is ending on April 30, 2026.
Campbell joined the Kraken in July 2024. She previously served as an assistant coach for the Kraken’s AHL affiliate, the Coachella Valley Firebirds. Under her guidance, the Firebirds reached the Calder Cup Final in both seasons.
The Kraken have struggled recently. They missed the playoffs in the past two seasons and qualified only once since their debut in 2021-22. During the 2024-25 season, their record was 35-41-6.
At 33 years old, Campbell hails from Moosomin, Saskatchewan. She has an impressive background in women’s hockey, having played for Canada at the 2015 World Championship and helped the Calgary Inferno win the Clarkson Cup in 2016.
Key facts:
- Campbell has been with the Kraken for four years.
- The Firebirds reached the Calder Cup Final twice during her tenure.
- Kraken general manager Jason Botterill supports Campbell’s decision to seek new opportunities.
Botterill stated, “As Jessica’s current contract expires, she has expressed her desire to explore other coaching roles across the League and we support her in this process.” He also praised her contributions to player development.
Reports suggest that Campbell is expected to generate interest from other NHL teams. Yet, it doesn’t appear Seattle has closed the door on bringing her back next season.
