Costco has introduced bottled water as a new option for its iconic $1.50 hot dog combo, marking the first change in over 40 years. The new option is available at all Costco locations in Canada, allowing customers to choose between a Kirkland Signature bottled water or soda. This change reflects Costco’s commitment to maintaining affordable food pricing.
Costco’s hot dog combo includes a quarter-pound, all-beef hot dog. Previously, customers could only get a soda with their meal. The bottled water option is a 16.9-ounce Kirkland Signature bottle, replacing the previous 20-ounce soda.
The decision to add bottled water comes as many fast-food chains expand their beverage options. Costco has maintained the price of the hot dog combo since 1985, which has garnered a devoted fan base. Costco’s CEO stated there are no plans to raise the price of the combo.
Reactions from customers have been mixed but generally positive. An Instagram user expressed excitement about the new option, saying, “I love that Costco is now also offering the hot dog combo with water!” A Reddit commenter noted, “I’d rather have the bottle water than the soda for sure.” However, some fans voiced concerns about any potential price increases.
Jim Sinegal, co-founder of Costco, humorously warned against raising prices: “If you raise the effing hot dog, I will kill you. Figure it out.” Another customer lamented, “What I’m really gonna miss most is not just consuming glizzies, but spending only $1.50 on a meal.”
Observers note that this change could signal a shift in how Costco approaches its food offerings. With rising food costs impacting many retailers, Costco’s ability to keep prices low remains crucial for its membership model.
