Alexander Blockx, a rising Belgian star, achieved his first Top-10 victory by defeating Felix Auger-Aliassime at the Mutua Madrid Open. Blockx won the match 7-6(3), 6-3. This victory marked Blockx’s first win over a Top-10 opponent.
Blockx advanced to the fourth round of the ATP Masters 1000 event. At just 20 years old, he is making significant strides in his career. Following this match, he moved up 16 spots to No. 53 in the ATP Live Rankings.
Earlier this month, Blockx reached the last 16 in Monte-Carlo. He displayed impressive form on clay courts throughout that tournament. The match against Auger-Aliassime lasted 1 hour and 33 minutes.
Blockx expressed confidence during the match. “I had so much confidence. I didn’t even think about panicking or losing my serve,” he said. He added, “In the first set, I was just trying to find my game.” His performance improved as the match progressed.
He noted that he faced only one break point during the match. “On my service games it went pretty smoothly,” he remarked. Yet, he highlighted that in the second set, he played at one of his best levels.
Looking ahead, Blockx will face the 16th seed Francisco Cerundolo in the next round. Observers expect this matchup to be competitive given both players’ recent performances.
