Zayne Parekh was selected ninth overall in the 2024 NHL Draft, viewed as a potential savior for the Calgary Flames. His draft-eligible season with the Saginaw Spirit was impressive, where he scored 33 goals and recorded 96 points. Following this, he continued to demonstrate his scoring ability in the 2024-25 season, netting 33 goals and accumulating 107 points.
However, Parekh’s transition to the NHL has been challenging. In the current season, he has played 27 professional games, including 22 with the Flames, but has only managed to record two assists in 23 games. His average ice time has been around 16 minutes per game, indicating that he is being given opportunities to contribute.
In November, Parekh suffered an injury that sidelined him until February, impacting his development during what was expected to be a significant year. Upon his return, he managed to score a power-play goal in a game against the Kings, but his overall performance has raised concerns.
As of now, Parekh has a minus-4 rating over 26 appearances this season, and all of his points have come on the power play. Analysts have noted that while he shows flashes of skill, he has not yet been able to consistently perform at the NHL level. Steven Ellis remarked, “He’s still able to show those skills, but it’s not at the NHL level yet.”
Critics have pointed out that Parekh’s development year has felt wasted, with one source stating, “This season as a whole has felt like a waste in what is supposed to be a big development year for Parekh.” There is a growing concern that he may be penalized for mistakes, which could hinder his growth in the league.
Despite these challenges, Parekh will be AHL eligible for the 2026-27 season, which may provide him with additional opportunities to refine his skills and gain valuable experience. As he continues to adapt to the professional level, the Flames and their fans remain hopeful for his future contributions.
