Severe Weather Alert Issued
Environment Canada has issued a yellow-coded wind warning for the Central and South Okanagan, indicating that residents should prepare for potentially hazardous conditions. Wind gusts are expected to reach up to 90 km/h from Lake Country down to Oliver, while Vernon is forecasted to experience winds of around 80 km/h.
The warning extends to the Coquihalla Highway from Hope to Merritt, where gusts could also reach 90 km/h. This sharp cold front is causing strong winds and potential damage in the affected regions, as noted by Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC).
Impact on Metro Vancouver and Fraser Valley
In addition to the Okanagan, a yellow level alert has been issued for parts of Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley. Gusts up to 90 km/h are forecasted, with the eastern Fraser Valley potentially experiencing winds as high as 100 km/h.
The Coquihalla Highway is also expecting significant snowfall, with up to 60 cm of snow anticipated throughout the day Wednesday and into Thursday. The Okanagan Connector is forecasted to receive around 10 cm of snow, while Highway 3 may see up to 25 cm.
Weather Conditions and Future Outlook
A low-pressure system crossing the southwest interior tonight will bring another round of heavy flurries, blowing snow, and strong winds to the southern interior highways. ECCC has stated, “A sharp cold front crossing southern B.C. will bring very strong southerly winds to the southwestern interior this evening.”
Conditions are expected to improve Thursday morning, but the immediate impact of these weather patterns could pose risks to travel and safety in the affected areas. Details remain unconfirmed as the situation develops.
