High winds continue to sweep across Quebec, causing power outages that have left more than 315,000 homes without electricity. Wind gusts have reached up to 120 kilometres per hour in some areas, prompting Environment Canada to issue yellow wind warnings for several regions.
According to Simon Legault, “So everybody is going to get some high winds at some point during the day and maybe [the] evening for the eastern part of the province.” This forecast aligns with the ongoing weather patterns, which are attributed to a collision of warm and cold air masses.
In addition to Quebec, Calgary is experiencing warm and windy weather, with gusts reaching up to 80 km/h. Meanwhile, the City of Windsor is dealing with the aftermath of intense winds that caused damage and downed trees, with wind speeds recorded between 90 km/h and 115 km/h.
Windsor has received around 200 reports of wind-related issues since Friday afternoon. Yemi Adeyeye, a city official, noted, “Trees that are blocking city right-of-ways, so blocking the road, and impedes people from going about their normal business, or any tree that falls onto resident’s property like their car, or their houses, or blocking entry or exit from houses.”
As cleanup efforts continue in Windsor, Adeyeye added, “We will still need to go back and maybe diagnose what we need to do to finalize the tree management.” The situation remains dynamic as high winds persist across the region.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding the full extent of the damage and the timeline for restoring power to affected homes. Residents are advised to stay updated on weather alerts and take precautions as the windy conditions are expected to continue.
