What Happened
Hamza Ahmed Khan, a dual Canadian-Pakistani citizen and PhD student at the University of Toronto (UofT), was arrested in Pakistan while conducting research for his dissertation. He traveled to Pakistan in December to interview experts on the politics of democracy promotion in Muslim-majority societies. His family reported that he was expected to arrive in Karachi on Thursday morning to spend Ramadan with them but never showed up.
Why It Matters
The family learned of his arrest from a Pakistani journalist, who informed them that Khan was taken into custody by the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) due to alleged ‘inflammatory’ social media posts. McMaster University professor Ahmed Shafiqul Huque suggested that Khan’s research may have upset influential figures in Pakistan.

Currently, Khan is in prison under conditions described by his brother as “the worst you can imagine,” with multiple individuals confined in a single cell. The family is deeply concerned for his well-being and is seeking assistance from Canadian authorities.
