“I’m beyond excited to join the Blue Jays!” said Tyler Fitzgerald, reflecting on his recent trade from the San Francisco Giants.
Fitzgerald, 28, was acquired by the Blue Jays for cash considerations after being designated for assignment by the Giants. Following the trade, he was optioned to Triple-A Buffalo, where he will continue to develop his skills.
In 2025, Fitzgerald made 72 appearances with the Giants, where he struggled offensively, hitting .217 with 10 doubles, a triple, four home runs, and 14 RBIs. Despite these challenges, he showcased his speed on the bases, stealing nine bases and contributing defensively with seven runs saved while playing second base.
Fitzgerald’s journey in Major League Baseball began when he made his debut in 2023 after being selected in the fourth round of the 2019 draft out of the University of Louisville. His performance improved in 2024, where he hit .280 with 15 home runs, primarily as a shortstop.
His career statistics reflect a batting average of .252, with 21 home runs and 53 RBIs over 178 games. Additionally, Fitzgerald has stolen 28 bases in 36 attempts since entering the league, demonstrating his speed, which ranked in the 97th percentile last season.
Manager Tony Vitello expressed confidence in Fitzgerald’s potential, stating, “He’s got a tool set, there’s no doubt about it, and the want-to is not a problem.” He further noted that a fresh start with the Blue Jays could be beneficial for Fitzgerald, saying, “When you got that clean slate, it’s a little easier to go play; I think a fresh set of circumstances can help him march on.”
Fitzgerald’s excitement about joining the Blue Jays marks a new chapter in his career, and he expressed gratitude for his time with the Giants, stating, “I’m truly grateful for my time in San Francisco. Since 2019, I’ve been honored to wear Giants across my chest and create memories that will last forever.”
As Fitzgerald prepares for the next steps in his career, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how he adapts to his new environment with the Blue Jays.
