A suspected hantavirus outbreak on the MV Hondius cruise ship has resulted in three deaths and left around 150 passengers stranded off the coast of Cape Verde. The ship is operated by Oceanwide Expeditions.

Three passengers have died due to the suspected outbreak. Among those still on board, approximately four Canadians are included. A British man is in critical condition after being evacuated to South Africa. At least three other people on the ship have fallen ill, and two crew members are also showing symptoms.

The MV Hondius was on a polar cruise from Argentina to Antarctica when the outbreak was reported. It left Ushuaia, Argentina, in March 2026. The ship has been refused permission to dock in Cape Verde as a precaution against further spread of the virus.

Key facts:

Three passengers have died due to the suspected hantavirus outbreak.

A British man is in critical condition after medical evacuation.

Approximately 150 people remain on board, including four Canadians.

The World Health Organization stated that the risk to the wider public remains low.

Hantavirus can be spread through contact with rodent droppings or urine, which raises concerns about how it may have entered the ship. Officials have not confirmed the exact source of the outbreak. Dr. Hans Henri P. Kluge from the World Health Organization emphasized that while hantavirus infections can be severe, they are not easily transmitted between people.

Jake Rosmarin, a passenger on board, expressed concern for those affected: “We’re not just headlines. We’re people with families, with lives, with people waiting for us at home.” As health officials continue to monitor the situation, they urge calm among those concerned about potential public health risks.
