What Happened
Schools across Nova Scotia were closed on Tuesday due to a severe winter storm that brought heavy snow and high winds to the region. The Halifax Regional Centre for Education announced the closure of all schools to ensure safety and facilitate snow-clearing efforts. Other regional centres, including Annapolis Valley, Chignecto-Central, and Cape Breton-Victoria, also canceled classes.
Why It Matters
The storm prompted Environment Canada to issue a yellow-level winter storm warning, predicting hazardous conditions with up to 25 cm of snow in Halifax and up to 50 cm in some southwestern areas. As of early Tuesday morning, approximately 2,700 power outages were reported, primarily affecting the southwestern regions. The Halifax Regional Municipality urged residents to avoid non-essential travel to assist snow-clearing crews.
What’s Next
In addition to school closures, several universities, including Dalhousie University and Saint Mary’s University, delayed their openings until 10 a.m. Other institutions, such as St. Francis Xavier University and Acadia University, adjusted their schedules accordingly. The municipality has rescheduled curbside waste collection and will enforce a winter parking ban overnight. Residents are advised to stay updated on travel conditions and flight statuses, as operations at Halifax Stanfield International Airport are also affected by the storm.
