This year, the festivities in Kelowna included performances by Irish dancers and a popular Irish band, creating a lively atmosphere at local venues. The celebration at Kelly O’Bryan’s showcased Guinness and green drinks, embodying the spirit of the holiday. Historically, St. Patrick’s Day honors Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, who was a missionary that spread Christianity throughout the country. Shane Lynn, a local historian, explained, “This supposedly came from the frequency of Irish prospectors in the gold rushes in the American West in the 19th century.”
Despite the modern interpretations of St. Patrick’s Day, some symbols, such as the four-leaf clover, do not hold traditional significance in Ireland. Furthermore, the idea of leprechauns is more a product of North American pop culture than of authentic Irish folklore.
