Montreal’s St. Patrick’s Day parade is set to celebrate its 201st anniversary on March 17, 2026, showcasing the rich Irish heritage and culture that has become a hallmark of the city. The event will feature 92 groups, including 15 marching bands and 6 dance groups, drawing participants and spectators from across the city and beyond.
Saint Patrick, a Roman Briton, is credited with bringing Christianity to Ireland during the 5th century. He was kidnapped by Irish raiders at the age of 16 and brought to Ireland as a slave. His legacy as the patron saint of Ireland is commemorated annually on March 17, believed to be the date of his death.
The first recorded St. Patrick’s Day parade took place in 1762 in New York, but Montreal has since established its own vibrant celebration. Lori Morrison, president of the United Irish Societies of Montreal, noted, “Each year, the Montreal St. Patrick’s Day parade attracts people from across our city and from around the world.”
Devin St James, vice-president of the United Irish Societies of Montreal, emphasized the parade’s reflection of the city’s spirit: “Today, the parade reflects on the spirit of Montreal itself; diverse, welcoming, and proud of the many cultures that make up our community.”
Leslie Roberts, a member of Montreal’s city council, added, “Celebrating St. Patrick is also celebrating Montreal — a city known for its diversity.” The shamrock, a symbol of Irish heritage, was famously used by Saint Patrick to explain the Holy Trinity, further intertwining his legacy with Irish culture.
As the parade approaches, excitement builds within the community. Annelise Meerton, an Australian exchange student, expressed her astonishment at the festivities, stating, “It was very crazy, to be honest. There’s no words for it in that moment of how shocked I was.”
The historical significance of the holiday began as a religious feast day in the early 17th century, commemorating Saint Patrick’s life and work. Observers expect this year’s parade to continue the tradition of celebrating Irish culture while fostering a sense of community among diverse populations.
