The numbers
The construction of a new roundabout at the intersection of Portugal Cove Road, Major’s Path, and Airport Heights Drive is scheduled to begin on April 13, 2026. This project aims to improve traffic flow and enhance safety for both drivers and pedestrians in the area. During the construction phase, traffic will continue to move through the area, although disruptions are expected.
To mitigate the impact on commuters, one lane of traffic will remain open in each direction on Portugal Cove Road at all times. Similarly, during peak traffic hours, one lane will also be open in each direction on Major’s Path and Airport Heights Drive. This approach is designed to minimize congestion while the roundabout is being constructed.
In addition to the roundabout project, recent evaluations of public funding for sports in Portugal reveal significant challenges within the sector. The average evaluation of public funding for sports stands at 2.30 on a 1–5 scale, indicating a concerning level of support. Furthermore, around 61% of higher education institutions in Portugal do not have their own sports facilities, with approximately 89% relying on external venues for sports activities.
These statistics highlight a broader issue within university sports in Portugal. A staggering 65.8% of FADU clubs report a lack of coaches and sports technicians, while 64.5% emphasize insufficient support for dual careers. Diogo Salgado Braz, a representative from FADU Portugal, stated, “We are facing a very concerning scenario, which reveals a significant structural gap in university sport in Portugal compared to other European realities.”
Moreover, the lack of funding and infrastructure, combined with limited strategic priority, continues to constrain the development of the sector. Cláudia Sarrico, another advocate for university sports, noted, “Strengthening the role of sport within higher education systems is important, particularly in promoting student wellbeing and institutional development.”
FADU Portugal aims to reinforce advocacy efforts for a stronger university sport system and will host two 2026 FISU World University Championships later this year, which may provide a platform to address these ongoing issues.
The construction of the roundabout marks the final phase of the multi-year Major’s Path and Portugal Cove Road Improvements project. As the project progresses, observers will be closely monitoring its impact on traffic patterns and safety in the area. Details remain unconfirmed regarding any additional measures that may be implemented to facilitate smoother traffic flow during the construction period.
