Pokémon Champions is the second new Pokémon game to arrive in 2026, following Pokémon Pokopia. This upcoming title aims to expand the Pokémon franchise’s reach by introducing a free-to-start battle game that emphasizes competitive play.
Set to launch on April 8, 2026, Pokémon Champions will be available on both the Nintendo Switch and the anticipated Nintendo Switch 2. The game is designed to provide a robust online experience, featuring several modes including Ranked Battles, Casual Battles, and Private Battles. Players will have the opportunity to engage in battles with friends or compete against others globally.
Players can also bring their Pokémon from previous games into Pokémon Champions via Pokémon HOME, enhancing the game’s appeal to long-time fans of the series. The game will feature Mega-Evolved Pokémon such as Mega Meganium, Mega Emboar, and Mega Feraligatr, which adds a layer of strategy to battles.
In addition to the free-to-start model, Pokémon Champions will offer a Premium Battle Pass and Membership system available for purchase. This system is designed to provide players with additional content and rewards, further incentivizing engagement with the game. Players can earn victory points, which can be used to modify Pokémon and recruit them multiple times per day, allowing for a more personalized gameplay experience.
As part of the launch, players who purchase the Pokémon Champions + Starter Pack bundle via the Nintendo eShop will receive extra storage for their Pokémon, enhancing their ability to manage their collection. The Starter Pack includes 30 Teammate Tickets and 50 Training Tickets, which will aid players in their initial gameplay.
In a move to broaden its audience, a mobile version of Pokémon Champions is also in development, featuring cross-play support. This will allow players on different platforms to compete against each other, further integrating the Pokémon community.
Industry observers note that Nintendo plans to produce 4 million units of the Nintendo Switch 2 for the upcoming quarter, a reduction from the originally planned 6 million units.
