A 9-year-old boy was reportedly held captive in a van by his father for over a year in Hagenbach, Alsace, France. The boy was discovered by gendarmes after a local resident reported hearing “child noises” coming from a parked van. Upon their arrival, authorities found the child pale, malnourished, and lying in a fetal position on a pile of garbage.
The boy’s father, aged 43, has since been placed in provisional detention for one year. He admitted to kidnapping and neglecting his son, stating that he locked the boy in the van to prevent him from being sent to a psychiatric hospital. The father lived with his 37-year-old partner and two other children, who are not involved in the case.
According to the prosecutor, the child was found in a distressing state: “L’enfant « pâle et manifestement dénutri », était « couché en position fœtale, nu, recouvert d’une couverture sur un monticule de déchets et à proximité d’excréments.”
The boy’s partner has also been charged with failure to assist a minor in danger and failure to report mistreatment. This case has raised significant concerns regarding child welfare and the responsibilities of adults in safeguarding minors.
In a separate but related context, Mary de Danemark recently expressed her love and gratitude for her father, John Dalgleish Donaldson, who passed away at the age of 84. Despite the long distance between Denmark and Tasmania, their bond remained strong.
This sentiment was echoed by Marianne Singer, who remarked on the sadness of the loss and the deep connection Mary had with her father.
As investigations continue, authorities are expected to provide further updates on the case. Observers are particularly concerned about the implications for child protection services and the measures that will be taken to prevent similar incidents in the future. Details remain unconfirmed.
