OpenAI rocketed into the mainstream following the launch of its ChatGPT chatbot in 2022. The company has since expanded its offerings and capabilities, positioning itself as a leader in artificial intelligence.
In a significant development, OpenAI announced plans to combine its web browser, ChatGPT app, and Codex coding app into a singular desktop super app. This move aims to streamline the user experience and reduce fragmentation across its platforms.
Additionally, OpenAI is acquiring Python developer toolmaker Astral, known for its widely used open-source Python tools. This acquisition is expected to enhance OpenAI’s capabilities in software development.
OpenAI also rolled out GPT-5.4, an all-in-one model designed for professional workflows. The new model can handle complex work across more than forty professions and achieved a 75 percent task success rate on the OSWorld-Verified benchmark.
Fidji Simo, CEO of Applications at OpenAI, emphasized the importance of focus in their current strategy, stating, “Companies go through phases of exploration and phases of refocus; both are critical.” She added, “What really matters for us right now is staying focused and executing extremely well.”
GPT-5.4 boasts capabilities such as writing code, searching the web, and navigating desktops, making it a versatile tool for professionals. OpenAI aims to double down on successful products like Codex, which is designed to participate in the entire development workflow.
The pricing for GPT-5.4 is set at USD$2.50 per 1 million input tokens and USD$15.00 per 1 million output tokens for long-context standard use. The long-context version of GPT-5.4 can process up to 1.05 million tokens, while the standard version handles 272,000 tokens before extra charges apply.
OpenAI’s advancements with GPT-5.4 indicate a significant leap over its earlier models, particularly in hard web-browsing and tool-use tests. The company stated that it will enable AI agents to work more directly with the tools developers already rely on every day.
As OpenAI continues to innovate and expand its offerings, observers are keen to see how these developments will impact the AI landscape and the user experience moving forward.
