Fire Breaks Out at Senior Care Home
“Staff from the retirement residence are still in the process of trying to confirm whether everyone was safely evacuated,” stated a representative from Mission RCMP as a major fire engulfed Chartwell Carrington House on March 9, 2026.
The fire erupted around 6 p.m. on 7th Avenue near Cedar Valley Connector, leading to a swift response from the Mission Fire Rescue Service and other emergency resources. Flames and smoke were visible rising from the building, prompting the establishment of a Reception Centre at the nearby Mission Leisure Centre to assist evacuees.
Multiple firefighters and engines were deployed to battle the structure fire, with 7th Avenue closed in both directions between Cedar Street and Briskham Street to facilitate emergency operations. As the situation unfolded, emergency support services were also on scene to provide aid to those displaced.
Firefighters conducted a thorough search of the third floor and reported it clear shortly after 7:07 p.m., while a confinement crew continued to battle the blaze, which was fully engulfed in flames. By 7:15 p.m., the firefighting efforts were ongoing, and nurses from the facility delivered three carloads of blankets to assist those affected.
The Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service was paged for mutual aid, indicating the scale of the response required for the mission fire. As of now, details remain unconfirmed regarding any injuries resulting from the incident.
“Mission Fire Rescue Service and all available emergency resources are on scene and actively responding,” the City of Mission reported, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.
As the fire continues to be addressed, officials have urged the public, “If you do not need to be in the vicinity, choose an alternate route and keep roads clear for emergency vehicles.”
Additional updates will be provided as they become available, as the community awaits further information on the status of the residents and the ongoing firefighting efforts.
