Leon Draisaitl is expected to miss the rest of the regular season due to a lower-body injury sustained during a recent game against the Nashville Predators. At the time of his injury, Draisaitl had impressive statistics, with 35 goals and 62 assists over 65 games, placing him fourth in the league with a total of 97 points.
The injury occurred during a hit from Ozzy Wiesblatt, after which Draisaitl briefly returned to the ice for one shift but did not participate in the second or third periods. The Edmonton Oilers will now be without their star player for at least 14 games, extending through April 16.
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, a teammate, remarked on Draisaitl’s importance, stating, “Obviously he’s a top-four scorer, one of the most elite players in the league.” This injury comes as a significant blow to the Oilers, who have relied heavily on Draisaitl’s contributions, especially on the power play.
Historically, Draisaitl has been a durable player, having missed few games throughout his career and often playing through injuries. He was drafted third overall by the Oilers in 2014 and has since become a cornerstone of the franchise, winning the Hart Memorial Trophy and the Ted Lindsay Award in the 2019-20 season.
Despite his absence, the Oilers will need to adapt quickly. Nugent-Hopkins added, “(Draisaitl’s) obviously a huge piece of this team and we’ve got to find ways to win games without him.” Coach Kris Knoblauch noted the uncertainty surrounding Draisaitl’s condition, stating, “He got checked out, didn’t feel right… felt like he could play on it.”
As the team navigates this challenging period, observers are left wondering about the potential impact on their playoff aspirations. Details remain unconfirmed regarding whether Draisaitl will miss any playoff time as well.
