What Happened
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has announced a recall of Kendamil brand infant formula sold online and at Costco due to potential contamination with cereulide toxin. This toxin can lead to food poisoning, with symptoms such as nausea and vomiting. The affected products are one-kilogram containers labeled ‘with whole milk’ and include batch codes 897274 and 888632, produced in May 2025.
Why It Matters
Cereulide is a heat-stable toxin produced by certain strains of Bacillus cereus, making it resistant to cooking processes that typically eliminate harmful bacteria. Although no illnesses have been reported in connection with this recall, the CFIA advises consumers to refrain from consuming, using, selling, serving, or distributing the affected products. This recall follows similar actions taken by Nestlé and Danone due to the same toxin.
What’s Next
Kendal Nutricare, the manufacturer of Kendamil, has indicated that the contamination may be linked to a temporary supply disruption that led to the use of a different oil source in the affected batches. Consumers are urged to check their products for the specified batch codes and dispose of them accordingly. The CFIA continues to monitor the situation and will provide updates as necessary.
