What Happened
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has announced a recall of Kendamil brand infant formula sold at Costco due to concerns over a toxin that can lead to food poisoning. The recall specifically affects one-kilogram containers labeled “with whole milk” that may contain cereulide toxin, which is known to cause nausea and vomiting.
Why It Matters
Cereulide, produced by certain strains of Bacillus cereus, is highly heat-stable, meaning it cannot be destroyed through cooking or preparation. Although no illnesses have been reported in connection with this product, the recall was initiated following similar incidents involving other baby formula brands, such as Nestlé and Danone, which also faced recalls due to potential contamination with the same toxin.
What’s Next
Health Canada advises consumers to refrain from using, selling, or distributing the affected Kendamil infant formula. The recalled batches, produced in May 2025, can be identified by their codes 897274 and 888632, and the product has a best before date of May 1, 2027. Parents and caregivers are urged to check their supplies and return any affected products to the place of purchase.
