Jonathan Castagna Acquired by Calgary Flames
In a significant move, Jonathan Castagna has been acquired by the Calgary Flames from the Utah Mammoth. The trade, which took place recently, involved the Flames sending MacKenzie Weegar to Utah in exchange for Olli Maatta, Castagna, and three second-round picks in the 2026 NHL Draft.
Castagna, a 20-year-old left shot center from Etobicoke, Ontario, has made a notable impact this season. He has scored 14 goals and accumulated 32 points in 29 NCAA games while playing for Cornell University. His performance has been instrumental in leading the Big Red in scoring, as they finished the season with a 20-8-1 overall record and ranked No. 9 in the USCHO national poll.
During this season, Castagna has also demonstrated his skills in face-offs, winning an impressive 64.6% of the nearly 600 he took. This breakout campaign has seen him surpass his previous NCAA career highs in both goals and assists.
Cornell University, where Castagna is currently a junior, is entering the post-season as back-to-back ECAC tournament champions. Last spring, they were just a win away from reaching the Frozen Four for the first time since 2003, highlighting the competitive nature of their program.
In his first comments following the trade, Castagna expressed his excitement about joining the Flames, stating, “It really is an honour.” He added, “I guess you could say that it was definitely an interesting day.”
Castagna also shared his playing style, noting, “I like to play physical, and I also really value the defensive aspects of the game as much as I do the offence.” This dual focus on both ends of the ice could make him a valuable asset for the Flames as they look to bolster their roster.
As he prepares to transition to the NHL, Castagna remarked, “I’ve heard it’s really beautiful down there,” referring to Calgary. His enthusiasm for the new opportunity reflects the potential he brings to the Flames.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding the exact date of his debut with the Flames, but the acquisition is seen as a strategic move to enhance the team’s future prospects.
