“Webb spent his life transforming what was just a sideline school activity into one of the fastest growing sports in the world with his passion, leadership and endless determination,” stated the International Cheer Union following the news of Jeff Webb’s passing.
Jeff Webb, the founder of Varsity Spirit, died at the age of 76 after suffering a head injury during a game of pickleball two weeks prior. He was removed from life support shortly before his death on March 20, 2026.
Webb founded Varsity Spirit in 1974, initially as the Universal Cheerleading Association, and was instrumental in elevating cheerleading to a recognized sport. His efforts led to the International Olympic Committee granting cheerleading provisional recognition in July 2021.
“Jeff Webb was a remarkable innovator and a true pioneer of his sport. His vision helped elevate cheerleading from a local activity into a worldwide movement that inspires young people across continents,” remarked José Perurena, President of the International World Games Association.
Before his ventures in cheerleading, Webb was a collegiate sideline cheerleader at the University of Oklahoma. He sold Varsity Spirit to Herff Jones in 2011, later becoming CEO and president of the combined entity. In 2014, Varsity was acquired by Charlesbank Capital Partners for $1.5 billion, with Webb reportedly making $34.8 million from the sale.
Despite his success, Webb’s career was not without controversy. He faced legal scrutiny over alleged antitrust violations and sexual abuse cases within cheerleading, which cast a shadow on his legacy.
In December 2020, Webb officially cut ties with Varsity Spirit, stating, “I’m leaving Varsity Spirit, but I’m not leaving cheerleading.” His commitment to the sport remained evident until the end.
Webb’s influence extended beyond cheerleading; he was also a mentor to Charlie Kirk and recognized as a key figure in the conservative movement.
As the cheerleading community mourns his loss, many reflect on the profound impact Webb had on the sport and the lives of countless young athletes.
