Instagram DMs Outage Causes Major Disruptions for Users
On March 10, Instagram users faced major disruptions, primarily unable to access direct messages (DMs). This outage created a communication blackout for many, particularly affecting users in major cities such as Los Angeles, Phoenix, Chicago, Washington D.C., and New York.
Over 10,000 access complaints were logged on Downdetector, with the peak occurring in the early morning hours. A significant 71% of these complaints were related to access issues, while 19% were attributed to server problems, and 5% to feed glitches.
As the evening progressed, over 6,000 users reported problems on Downdetector as of 10:03 PM EST. Among these, 68% involved app disruptions, 19% were server connection issues, and 7% related to posting troubles.
Users reported being unable to send or receive DMs, which led many to turn to alternative messaging platforms like WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger to maintain communication during the outage. One user noted, “Around two hours ago, my message page didn’t show any messages at all, even though I have plenty, and I got two notifications earlier.” Another user expressed frustration, stating, “Instagram down I REPEAT INSTAGRAM DOWN.”
The outage highlighted the dependency of users on private messaging for both business negotiations and personal relationships. As children average over 30 minutes daily on Instagram, the impact of such outages raises concerns about declining concentration among younger users.
Despite the widespread disruption, Instagram has not yet provided detailed information about the cause of the outage. Details remain unconfirmed, leaving users and analysts alike questioning the reliability of the platform’s infrastructure.
As the situation develops, many are looking for assurances from Meta that improvements will be made to enhance infrastructure resilience and DM reliability in the future.
