What Happened
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has announced a recall of Kendamil brand infant formula sold at Costco due to potential contamination with cereulide toxin, which can lead to food poisoning. The affected product is sold in one-kilogram containers labeled “with whole milk.” The recall was initiated following a report of similar issues in another country.
Why It Matters
Cereulide toxin is particularly concerning as it is not destroyed by heat and can survive temperatures that typically kill bacteria. Although no illnesses have been reported in Canada, the CFIA is taking precautionary measures to ensure consumer safety. This recall follows recent recalls by Nestlé and Danone for similar contamination concerns.
What’s Next
Kendal Nutricare, the European-based company behind Kendamil, stated that the toxin has been linked to a different oil supply used during a short supply disruption for two batches of the formula. These batches, produced in May 2025, can be identified by the codes 897274 and 888632 located on the base of the tin. Consumers are advised to check their products and return them to the place of purchase for a refund.
