“I felt that people were just taking the beauty all for granted. They weren’t even noticing it,” said Linda Poole, a key participant in the Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival, which is set to begin its 20th annual tribute to the blooms on April 17, 2026.
This festival has become a significant cultural event in Metro Vancouver, British Columbia, celebrating the arrival of spring with the stunning display of cherry blossoms. The festival will feature a variety of events, including Blossoms After Dark and The Big Picnic, designed to engage the community and highlight the beauty of these iconic trees.
In addition to the Vancouver festival, the Richmond Cherry Blossom Festival will take place on April 12, 2026, showcasing activities such as folding origami animals and Japanese cultural demonstrations. Richmond is home to 255 Akebono cherry trees, which will be in full bloom during this time.
“When you see something beautiful like these cherry trees, the instinct is to want to touch the flowers and pull them down to get a close camera shot, but the wood is brittle and they break really easily,” noted Egan Davis, emphasizing the need for care in preserving the trees.
Douglas Justice, a horticulturist at the UBC Botanical Garden, added, “Every year that’s going to shorten the life of the tree. We need to make sure that we try to reduce as much of the stress that we can possibly affect.” The UBC Botanical Garden is home to about 55 different types of ornamental cherry trees, further enriching the local cherry blossom experience.
The cherry blossom season is not only celebrated in Vancouver but also holds cultural significance in Tokyo, where the cherry blossom forecast is broadcast on national television. The season in Tokyo is expected to begin on March 21, 2026, with a week to 10 days from flowering to full bloom.
