What does the recent acquisition of Boralex Inc. by Brookfield Asset Management Ltd. and La Caisse mean for the renewable energy landscape? The deal, valued at $9 billion including debt, signifies a major investment in clean energy, with an equity value of approximately $3.8 billion.
The acquisition price is set at $37.25 per share in cash, reflecting a strategic move by Brookfield and La Caisse, who are both key players in the energy sector. La Caisse, already Boralex’s largest shareholder with a 15% stake, will see its ownership increase to 30% upon completion of the deal.
Brookfield and its partners will hold 70% of Boralex after the acquisition, which is expected to close by the fourth quarter of 2026. This transaction has been unanimously approved by Boralex’s board of directors, indicating strong support for the move.
Boralex, a significant player in the renewable energy sector, had an installed capacity of almost 3,800 megawatts as of December 31, 2025, and has approximately 8,200 megawatts of projects in development and construction. This acquisition will add about four gigawatts of projects to Brookfield’s existing 46 gigawatts of global renewable energy.
Patrick Decostre, CEO of Boralex, stated, “This transaction brings in the right long-term partners for Boralex as we enter an accelerated growth phase requiring significant capital deployment and financial flexibility.” Jehangir Vevaina, Brookfield’s chief investment officer for energy, expressed excitement about partnering with La Caisse to enhance Boralex’s development pipeline.
Kim Thomassin, executive vice-president and head of Québec at La Caisse, emphasized that the acquisition reflects La Caisse’s strong confidence in Boralex. Brookfield also noted that the fundamentals remain strong for clean energy, which is why it’s adding more development capabilities in major strategic markets.
Historically, Boralex’s shares peaked above $55 in early 2021 but were trading at less than half that level as of last week, indicating a significant shift in market perception leading up to this acquisition.
As the renewable energy sector continues to evolve, the implications of this acquisition for Boralex and its stakeholders remain to be seen. Details remain unconfirmed regarding the specific operational changes that may follow the acquisition.
