How it unfolded
As the automotive industry shifts towards electrification, BMW is preparing to launch the 2027 i3, marking a significant milestone as the first sedan of the Neue Klasse era. This new model is designed to uphold the legacy of the iconic 3 Series while embracing a fully electric platform.
Production of the BMW i3 is set to commence at the company’s Munich plant in August 2026, with plans for the Canadian market to begin production at the end of 2026. Deliveries for this highly anticipated model are expected to start in the first half of 2027, as confirmed by BMW Canada.
The i3 boasts impressive specifications, including a combined output of 463 horsepower and 476 lb-ft of torque in the i3 50 xDrive variant. This performance is complemented by an estimated driving range of up to 700 kilometers (approximately 440 miles), making it one of the longest-range electric sedans available.
In terms of technology, the i3 features an 800-volt electrical architecture that enables fast charging capabilities of up to 400 kW, which is 30 percent faster than its predecessors. This advancement allows for greater convenience and efficiency for drivers, who can expect significantly reduced charging times.
Additionally, the i3 supports bidirectional charging, enabling vehicle-to-load and vehicle-to-home functionalities. This feature enhances the vehicle’s utility, allowing owners to power devices or even their homes using the car’s battery.
With a length of 187.4 inches, the i3 is built on the same Neue Klasse platform as the iX3 SUV, ensuring a robust and versatile design. It also includes a digital assistant and a full-width Panoramic Vision display, showcasing BMW’s commitment to integrating advanced technology into their vehicles.
The i3 will be available with an optional Adaptive M suspension, further enhancing its driving dynamics and comfort. As BMW continues to invest heavily in the Neue Klasse, with approximately 10 billion euros allocated for development, the i3 is poised to be a significant player in the electric vehicle market.
The introduction of the BMW i3 is a crucial step for the brand as it seeks to navigate the evolving landscape of electric mobility. With the i3, BMW aims to meet the growing demand for sustainable transportation while maintaining the performance and luxury that the brand is known for. The i3 has huge shoes to fill, but with its promising features, it is expected to be a range monster, delivering on BMW’s promise of 440 miles of driving range, fast charging times, and a wealth of onboard technology.
