“Safety and clear communications will be priorities for the TTC during this time,” a spokesperson from the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) stated regarding the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026.
Toronto is one of the 16 host cities for the tournament, and BMO Field will be renamed ‘Toronto Stadium’ for the duration of the event. The venue is scheduled to host six matches, with Canada’s opening game taking place on June 12, 2026.
In preparation for the influx of fans, the TTC plans to enhance service across all modes of transit. Streetcar service on the 509 Harbourfront and 511 Bathurst routes will be increased to every five minutes during most of the day from June 7 to July 24. Additionally, on match days, the Fleet Street Transit Hub will serve as the dedicated streetcar platform for pickups and drop-offs.
Further improvements include additional service on the 29/929 Dufferin bus during match days and weekends, as well as increased subway service on Lines 1 and 2.
Recently, Canada played against Iceland at BMO Field, resulting in a 2-2 draw. Jonathan David notably scored two penalty goals to help Canada equalize after Iceland had taken a surprising 2-0 lead in the first half.
Canada’s performance has been impressive, as they remain unbeaten in their last five matches, building momentum ahead of the World Cup.
With the tournament just around the corner, fans and officials alike are gearing up for what promises to be an unforgettable event in Toronto.
