BC Hydro is investigating a significant power outage that has affected three areas of Salt Spring Island, impacting approximately 2,400 customers. The outages began earlier in the day, with the first affecting close to 850 customers east of Sunset Drive and north of Elizabeth Drive.
A second outage was reported, impacting 1,277 customers north of Juniper Place, west of Walkers Hook Road and east of Delcliff Road. Additionally, a third outage affected 1,132 customers west of Walkers Hook Road and north of Collins Road. Fortunately, power has since been restored to the affected areas.
Chilliwack’s Situation
In Chilliwack, over 1,000 customers lost power due to strong wind gusts reaching up to 90 km/h. Emergency dispatchers reported a high volume of 9-1-1 calls, prompting local firefighters to switch to talk-about channels for communication.
Reports indicate that trees have fallen, knocking down power lines near Vedder Road and Stevenson Road, contributing to the outages. As of 10:25 p.m., Abbotsford had only four outages, with 1,369 customers still without power.
