Orange Alert Issued for Freezing Rain in Quebec
An orange alert has been issued for several regions in Quebec, Canada, due to expected freezing rain beginning early Wednesday, March 10, 2026. The alert, confirmed by Environnement Canada, warns residents of potentially hazardous conditions that could lead to significant disruptions.
The freezing rain is forecasted to start around 4 AM on Wednesday and is expected to last for up to 24 hours. During this critical period, which extends until 3 PM, up to 30 millimeters of freezing rain could accumulate, particularly affecting areas such as Grand Montreal, Montérégie, Outaouais, Lanaudière, and Laurentides.
Wind gusts of 45 to 60 km/h are also anticipated, especially in Outaouais and Montreal, which could exacerbate the situation. In Gatineau, residents should prepare for 10 to 20 millimeters of freezing rain, with some areas possibly seeing up to 30 millimeters.
In addition to the freezing rain, significant snowfall of up to 20 centimeters is expected in Saguenay and Bas-Saint-Laurent, further complicating travel and safety. The combination of freezing rain and snow could lead to widespread power outages, as noted by Jean-Charles Beaubois, who stated, “Ça va être une situation assez critique” (It will be quite a critical situation).
Authorities are urging residents to prepare for potential emergencies, advising that they assemble an emergency kit for at least 72 hours. This preparation is crucial as the freezing rain event could paralyze services across the affected regions.
Environnement Canada has characterized the situation as a “potentiellement critique de pluie verglaçante” (potentially critical freezing rain situation), emphasizing the need for caution. Residents are advised to stay informed and monitor updates from local meteorological services.
In light of the impending weather conditions, Maude Marquis-Bissonnette reassured the public, saying, “On est absolument prêts” (We are absolutely ready), indicating that emergency services are prepared to respond to any incidents that may arise from the severe weather.
The last significant freezing rain event in Quebec occurred in 2023, highlighting the region’s vulnerability to such weather phenomena. As the situation develops, residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and adhere to safety guidelines issued by local authorities.
