The Aga Khan announced the creation of an Economic Partnership Platform with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney during his visit to Ottawa on March 25, 2026. This initiative aims to advance joint development projects in sub-Saharan Africa and the Asia Pacific regions.
The partnership reflects a shared commitment between the Government of Canada and the Ismaili Imamat towards inclusive economic development. As part of this collaboration, the Ismaili Imamat will invest in multi-generational not-for-profit housing projects across Canada, facilitating the construction of affordable homes for low- and moderate-income households.
Rahim Aga Khan V, the 50th hereditary Imam of the Shia Nizari Ismaili Muslims, is visiting Canada from March 25 to 31, 2026. The visit includes community-focused engagements and the inauguration of a housing project in Toronto, which is expected to benefit the estimated 120,000 Ismailis living in Canada.
Mark Carney stated, “This will include formalizing the partnership between FinDev Canada and the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development,” emphasizing the importance of this collaboration. He described the meeting as a “historic day,” setting the stage for future cooperative efforts.
The partnership will also encompass collaboration on education, technology, and energy initiatives, further enhancing the relationship between Canada and the Ismaili Imamat. The Canada-Ismaili Imamat Joint Steering Committee will oversee the implementation of the partnership’s deliverables.
The Aga Khan expressed optimism about expanding cooperation with Canada, stating, “The values and principles that are so inherently Canadian, we share.” He added, “Today will set the stage for more work together to make the world a better place.”
This partnership builds on more than five decades of collaboration between Canada and the Ismaili Imamat, highlighting a long-standing commitment to mutual development goals.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding specific project timelines and funding allocations, but the initial reactions from both leaders indicate a strong commitment to the partnership’s objectives.
