The épicerie liquidation marie in Longueuil has experienced significant challenges following its unexpected popularity, attracting several hundreds of customers daily. This surge has led to parking issues, with reports of private driveways being blocked and confrontations between neighbors and customers.
Since the store opened in October, the Service de police de l’agglomération de Longueuil has increased patrols in the area to address these concerns. Notably, 370 parking infractions have been issued on Rue Brault since the store’s opening, highlighting the extent of the parking problem.
Épicerie Liquidation Marie operates on a recovery model, reselling surplus inventory rejected by major chains. This unique business model has allowed it to employ more than 700 people and open a dozen stores across the region, making it a significant player in the local economy.
Despite the challenges, the store complies with the city’s urban planning regulations, as confirmed by Raphaël Larocque-Cyr. However, store operators acknowledged that the Longueuil location proved more popular than anticipated, prompting adjustments to signage and urging customers to park legally and behave civilly.
Marie-Ève Breton, a representative of the store, noted, “in hindsight, a different site might have been preferable” to accommodate the high volume of traffic. The city has also modified street signage on February 3 to help manage the situation better.
The Longueuil outlet provides roughly ten on-site parking spaces, which is insufficient given the daily influx of customers. The store’s recovery-based inventory model explains the customer surge and spillover into residential areas, raising concerns among local residents.
As the situation develops, further measures may be implemented to alleviate the parking issues and improve community relations. Details remain unconfirmed regarding any additional plans from the city or the store operators to address these ongoing challenges.
